Sounds Make Words

Lesson One. Sounds Make Words. This part goes with pages eighteen, nineteen and twenty.
Page eighteen. Listen first. Here is a word, said slowly and stretched out. Mmm. Aaa. T. Mat. You just heard three sounds. Put together, they make one word.
Your turn. I'll say some sounds slowly. You put them together and say the word out loud. Pause me any time you need more time.
First one. /s/ /a/ /t/. [pause]
Next. /m/ /a/ /t/. [pause]
Last one. /a/ /t/. [pause]
Those words are yours to say. I won't say them for you.
Page nineteen. Here are your four sounds. Say each one after me.
/m/. Close your lips and hum. You can hear it in map, milk and money.
/s/. Keep your teeth close and let the air hiss out. You can hear it in sun, six and sale.
/t/. Tap your tongue behind your top teeth, and keep it quick. You can hear it in top, ten and time.
/a/. Open your mouth and drop your jaw a little. You can hear it in add and after.
Keep each sound short. Say /m/, not muh. Say /t/, not tuh.
Page twenty. Watch it work. Touch the s and say /s/. Touch the a and say /a/. Touch the t and say /t/. Say them closer together, then slide them into one word: sat.
Now you try. Touch the next three letters, say each sound, and slide them together. This one is yours.
The six words in the list on page twenty are for you to read. This recording doesn't read them. If you get stuck, go back to the four sounds on page nineteen.

Page twenty-one. Check Yourself. Find the three numbered rows of words in the middle of the page. I'll say one word from each row. Circle the word you hear.
Row one: am. [pause]
Row two: sat. [pause]
Row three: Tam. [pause]
